Understanding Site Traffic
Whether or not you regularly check traffic to your web site, a wealth of data is being gathered and stored in files that you can download and examine whenever you wish. You can also generate your own data or contract with a web traffic analyst to do it for you. Specialists who analyze web traffic data are in a specialized field called web analytics.

Servers have always recorded traffic information in structures called log files. In particular, they store two metrics called page views and visits. Many people try to use these measures to analyze their traffic, but they're not as useful as they once were.

Search engine spiders and server proxies have made it difficult to come to grips with a much more important set of metrics called unique visitors. In many cases, a visitor to your site can leave and re-enter many times, so the data might appear to be telling you that you have thousands of visitors when in fact you have only a few.

Conversely, because servers get their information from the IP addresses from which visitors originate, the web proxies that are in common use to provide security for many corporate networks channel many users through a single IP address. This means that your logfiles might show fewer unique visitors than you actually have.

This is not to say that all the data are useless, but you can't perform a good analysis of your data unless you understand these limitations.

Page Tagging To the Rescue
By the mid-1990s, web site developers were ready for more accurate data about the traffic to their sites. Web counters were invented to track the number of visitors to specific pages. You probably saw counters on web pages as you browsed, but now they're mostly invisible.

Page tagging doesn't just count the number of times a particular page is downloaded. It can also record information such as the amount of money spent on an e-commerce site. Page tagging services also manage cookies. While cookies have been the subject of controversy in the last few years, they're not the electronic spies that many people think they are. Nevertheless, shopping carts designed to work with cookies are useless unless your potential customer is willing to turn the cookie blocker off.

Excellent news for fans of computer technology, neuroscience, and people who think that humans telling the machines what to do is totally backwards. Henry Markram, director of the Blue Brain Project, says we are ten years away from a functional artificial human brain. The Blue Brain project was launched in 2005 and aims to reverse engineer the mammalian brain from laboratory data.

We reported on the attempts of the Swiss Mind Brain Institute to simulate the neocortical column of the rat last year using an IBM Blue Gene machine with 10,000 processors, and they've announced success of the first phase of their project.

"We cannot keep on doing animal experiments forever," Markram told the audience at the TED Global Conference at Oxford, England. "There are two billion people on the planet affected by mental disorder," he told the audience. The project may give insights into new treatments."
They've successfully simulated the neocortical column of a rat – only a fraction of a full brain, but they proved that you don't get to do world-shattering research when you settle for second-best by choosing one of the most complicated and vital pieces of any mammalian cortex.

5 Common Visual Design Mistakes

I was working with a student intern the other day. We reviewed his first attempt at a rapid elearning course. For this review, we focused on the course’s visual design.

Overall, he did a great job, especially for someone just starting out. However, he made some mistakes that are common to many of the courses I see. I thought I’d do a quick rundown of what they are and provide some tips on how to prevent them.

1. Not Considering the Impact of the Visual Design

Good elearning design is as much about visual communication as it instructional design and learning theory.

When I learned video production years ago, we were always told that everything in the frame means something. It’s the same with the computer screen. You’re building the screen and adding content. Everything you add conveys a message, whether it’s your intention or not.

Look at a company like Apple. They build good products. But they also tell a compelling story. There is a consistent message between the products they sell and the way they pack it visually. It all adds to the Apple experience.

In the same sense, your course is a story. The content design and structure is part of it. But are you committed to a visual design that reinforces the key message and emotions?

It’s not about just making the screen look good. Visual design sets the tone for the course and that shouldn’t happen by accident. Everything on that screen communicates something. It’s your job to make sure that it’s communicating what you want it to.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey: We'd consider selling

Twitter would have to consider selling itself, if it is best for the company, co-founder and Chairman Jack Dorsey told DailyFinance.

"We have to put the product and the service that we're building first," Dorsey said in an exclusive interview with DailyFinance today after he spoke at New York University. "If it's better in the hands of another organization that can add support, then, yes, I mean, that's something I'd consider."

He'd rather not sell the fast-growing micro-blogging service, he said. Although costs are increasing as Twitter users multiply, Dorsey feels the San Francisco-based company has enough money to "be patient" about having to create revenue.

How many people in your life do you know that wish for love, happiness, and success? I think this is a ‘no-duh’ commonality between the vast majority of the global population. I think all three of these three things are great, and I’d like for everyone who wants them to achieve them.The only problem is… people should not only be careful of what they wish for, but know what they’re wishing for. This means to whip out a dictionary and a piece of paper and thoroughly define what each of these words means for you. If you have a misrepresentation of these words in your mind, you’re going to make some huge regrettable mistakes in life.

1. Love. A quick search pulls up “a deep feeling of sexual desire and attraction.” Imagine a person that goes through life by internalizing this as their definition of love. They could easily end up in an abusive relationship with a person they are infatuated with, and stay with them even though they are miserable, because they want love.Even though it’s an unhealthy relationship, it fits into their definition of love, so they remain confused, and attached, because this is what feels right for them.

2. Happiness. Some people might consider happiness as having some laughs, others might consider it as achieving some goals, while others settle for the definition of ‘nothing went wrong today.’The way I define happiness is “being the creator of your experience, choosing to take pleasure in what you have, right now, regardless of the circumstances, while being the best you that you can be.” As it turns out, my definition is centered around the journey, not around the accomplishment, so I can take pleasure in waking up and existing each day, instead of being miserable because I don’t have a ferrari yet.

3. Success. A quick search shows success to mean “a state of prosperity or fame.” I can see why a lot of people would be depressed if they wanted to be successful and this was their idea of success. Perhaps it is possible for everyone in the world to be rich and famous, but in reality that isn’t the way our world is currently structured.Perhaps it would be ‘wiser’ to define success as something else. Something that doesn’t come for nothing, but is accessible to everyone regardless of any circumstances. I would define success as “constant and never ending improvement”. If you set goals for yourself, and you take time each day, to work towards your goals, then you are successful in my book.At the end of the day, the questions we ask of ourselves determine the type of people that we will become…

Achieve Greater Awareness in Living & Experiencing Life?

Move Into Alternate Reality By Shifting Time lines Quantum science tells us that there is not a flat line running from the past to the future. This is the view of most people, but it is based on the old science, and is no longer true. Einstein has proven that time is not fixed, it expands and it contracts. And, time has a vertical dimension. There are many "lanes of time" running simultaneously and you can change lanes. You can begin in one lane, then change lanes to produce a different outcome than you expected in the original lane. This means there are multiple possibilities existing simultaneously in any instant, subject to our conscious and intentional choice.

We have the power to direct our awareness through this field of creative intelligence scientists call the quantum hologram. And through powerful thought we can activate another vertical strand of time, one in which we are whole and well and already healed, because we never were sick.

The same applies to every area of life, relationships, finances and success. Peak performance in every area of life is already a reality, in another thread of time. We have the power to activate any scenario in life that we want.

The quantum leap to a healthier you, a more abundant you, a more attractive you, a more successful you, a more youthful you, which exists in another thread of time, is possible only if you are able to break barriers of your current thinking. Your current thinking creates a prison that traps us in this linear reality of causation. When you imagine, you tap into an alternate possibility timeline where what you are imagining exists as reality. Having the feelings of experiencing that reality puts you into vibrational harmony with the frequency of that time line. Your visualization selects one of the possible scenarios within that time line to merge with your present time line.

Linear time, the idea that our past is set and future yet to come, is all an illusion. Linear time is a product of our minds, a limited interpretation of the way time actually functions. It is not time that moves past us while we watch, but our consciousness which moves through various time lines and experiences. Everything physical, in all its manifestations and possibilities, has already been created and exists as a static hologram. What has not been created yet is the world path we freely take through these possibilities, which particular experiences we choose, and what paths we take in learning a particular lesson. All probable futures have been created, but which of those futures we choose to move into is open.

Changes to fluid elements in reality does not only mean changes to present reality, but shifts in an entire time line, past and present. You do not have to concern yourself with causality, with "going back in time" and changing key events, but rather merging an alternate time line or dimension with your current one, which is identical to pulling all of mankind on to that alternate time line. Whether time lines are merged into yours, or whether you and mankind are pulled into the alternate time line makes no difference, for both are the same concept. Changing your time line is simply a matter of moving yourself and all connected to you spatially across timelines into another.

The basis of manifesting involves using one's mind to create or seek out an alternate time line, an alternate possibility to the way things are now or will most likely go in short time. Present reality and that alternate reality must be made identical in order for manifested changes to materialize. You consciously grab hold of the present reality by focusing on this point in space and time, then construct or select an alternate reality by visualizing the subject of your manifestation. You empower that visualization with the feeling of presence gained from focusing upon the present reality, and then fully bind the two by seeing them as identical.

First, you must be fully conscious to manifest something, which means planting your mind firmly upon this point in space and time, becoming aware of the here and now. This channels your will and energy into the actual present reality within which you exist, rather than sloppily diffusing it across random dimensions and moments as is typical of daydreams or states of inattention. This energy will be used to bind present reality to the one you intend to manifest.

While maintaining this alertness of the present moment and location, visualize what it is you intend to manifest. This is also the state of mind you go into when you pray. This creates an alternate dimension, an assemblage of thought forms, a way of seeking out candidate time lines which match the intended manifestation. The best fitting time lines are automatically selected, ones that accommodate the freewill of everyone whose realities are coupled to yours.

Last, you need to merge your visualized dimension or candidate time line with present reality. This is done by identifying both of them as being the same thing, by intending and believing that what you visualized is present reality. You use the feeling of full consciousness and awareness of the present reality to empower the visualized reality. They thus become bound together, and resynchronizations arise to complete their merger. This process can be abbreviated by skipping the first step, and simply placing full focus and intent into the visualized reality. The purpose of the first step is just to get a feel for "actuality".

What's Happening In Our World Today?

My philosophy has always been that it’s vitally important that everyone should maintain a positive attitude in everything they do or whatever happens to them in their daily lives.

But it sure seems to get more and more difficult everyday to make it happen. I guess it’s it's because I'm very concerned about what's happening in our world today and how it is negatively affecting all our lives. I cannot understand why we have let conditions deteriorate as much as we have.

I get thoroughly disgusted with the ridiculous rise and fall of gas prices (and the flimsy excuses of what's causing it), the political bickering over the Iraqi war, the corruption of top executives in various major corporations, the excessive prescription drug prices, unbelievable medical bills and the total breakdown of our morals. We even need to scrutinize our judicial system too. Judges are granting ridiculous plea bargains and early paroles, and also reducing sentences many times. And then you have prisoners being released by mistake and sex offenders not registering and even roaming the streets and committing the same crime time after time.

Isn’t this supposed to be "the greatest country on earth?" I guess it still is in many ways but in many ways it is not. If all these issues we are faced with today are allowed to continue what kind of a world can we expect for our grandchildren and great grandchildren? I am greatly concerned about that.

If you complain about any of these things in conversations with others the usual comment is, “you can’t do anything about it”. Well I’m not too sure this is true. I use to believe that the best way to solve these problems is become more serious whom you vote for. However I’m not convinced this is the correct answer anymore. It seems that the promises the politicians make during their political campaigns don’t always live up to what they preach when they get in office.

So here’s what I believe we must do that could make a difference:

(1) Become totally informed about those issues that concern you. Surf the Internet for all kinds of issues you are concerned about. There is revealing and valuable information on the Internet that will amaze and shock you about what's happening in our society.

(2) Look for articles and read books that reveal negative and shocking news that’s happening in our government, with the drug and medical industry, insurance companies, oil companies and the entire lobbyist that travel the halls of congress.

(3) Subscribe to various free newsletters on the Internet that deal with these same issues. I’ll keep you informed in my free newsletter about any such news I believe you should know about.

(4) Then in your conversations with others spread the word to everyone you possibly can. Don’t worry about people who have been brainwashed by sources making life difficult for all of us. There are plenty of other citizens out there concerned and fully disgusted about the alarming news that is destroying our society today.

(5) Lastly if you get really concerned I recommend writing your Congressman or Congresswoman about how you feel. I do not know how much it will help but it's worth a try anyway.

But what ever happens let’s not give up the fight. I believe eventually that public opinion will make a positive impact on the guilty ones. We just need to keep up the pressure by constantly spreading the truthful information we find. Let’s try it. OK?
